Event Title:   Workshop on Developing Cultural Competence in Counselling in a Multicultural Malaysia
13-Apr-2019 to 13-Apr-2019 Past Event
Remarks & Theme :   CPD hours for trained and licensed counsellors (TBC)

Since Merdeka, with economic development and influx of foreign workers, Malaysia is becoming more diverse with multiple ethnicities, languages, customs, foods, and cultural worldviews. All these have contributed to Malaysia’s great cultural heritage, making it a favourite tourist destination. However, for the mental health professionals, the multicultural phenomenon also evokes some cross-cultural challenges as well. While most Malaysians and foreign workers communicate easily in Bahasa Malaysia, there still exist racial prejudice, biases, suspicions, and misunderstanding. The primary task for counsellors is to develop their cultural competence to ensure optimal positive therapeutic outcome. This workshop will help counsellors to become more aware and sensitive of their own and their counselees’ cultural embeddedness. Counsellors will learn how to grow in their cultural competence by constructing their own cultural genogram and by assessing their journey on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. They will also learn to use the GRACE Model to develop their counselee’s strength based cross-cultural coping skills.

Learning Objectives

Participants able to:

  1. Counsellors will identify the spectrum of diversity issues that influence themselves and their counselees’ ability to solve their presenting problems.
  2. Counsellors will appraise their own acculturative experiences of intentional and unintentional imposition of cultural values on their counselees.
  3. Counsellors will recall the acculturation process and the importance of bicultural focality as a therapeutic outcome.
  4. Counsellors will assess and intervene on the presenting problems of their counselees using the GRACE Model.
  5. Counsellors will evaluate the qualities necessary to be a competent cross-cultural counsellor.
